How Alcohol Affects Your Blood Pressure and Heart, Explained

The dose of alcohol had to be reported by study authors for inclusion in the systematic review. Because there are no published standards for differentiating between low and medium doses of alcohol, we chose the alcohol content in one standard drink as the threshold between low dose and medium dose. Because the alcohol content in one standard Sober living house drink varies among different countries (ranging from 8 g to 14 g), we chose the Canadian standard for an alcoholic beverage, which is 14 g of pure alcohol (CCSA). To differentiate between medium and high doses, the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) identifies less than 30 g of alcohol for men and less than 20 g of alcohol for women as the threshold for low risk of alcohol intake (CCSA).

  • For women, the number of drinks necessary to produce this effect may be lower.
  • We most often used the reported endpoint SE/SD value to impute the SE/SD of MD.
  • Endothelial dysfunction is an early indicator of blood vessel damage and atherosclerosis, as well as a strong prognostic factor for future CV events (Deanfield et al. 2007; Ras et al. 2013).
  • If you use more than that, cutting back or quitting may lower your blood pressure, levels of fat called triglycerides, and chances of heart failure.

Data from isolated papillary and heart muscle cell (myocyte) experiments demonstrate that acute physiologic intoxicating doses of alcohol lowers blood pressure alcohol (80 mg% to 250 mg%) can have a negative inotropic effect (Danziger et al. 1991; Guarnieri and Lakatta 1990). In humans, endothelial function is assessed by measuring the widening (i.e., dilation) of the brachial artery under different conditions. Some research noted that endothelial function is impaired in abstinent individuals with a long-term history of alcohol abuse or alcoholism(Di Gennaro et al. 2007, 2012; Maiorano et al. 1999). Other studies have examined the effect of a single binge-drinking episode and found impairment in brachial artery endothelial-dependent and -independent vasodilation (Bau et al. 2005; Hashimoto et al. 2001; Hijmering et al. 2007). Therefore, as in animal studies, the effects of ethanol on endothelial function in humans likely depend on the dose and duration of ethanol consumption.

Health Conditions

Activation of PKCɛ may protect the myocardium against ischemia–reperfusion injury by stimulating the opening of mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium channels. This in turn prevents the opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (Walker et al. 2013). With that said, there may be other compounds in coffee such as antioxidants, micronutrients and other plant compounds that have an anti inflammatory effect and are actually beneficial for blood pressure. The effect of coffee on blood pressure has been a longstanding source of controversy in the scientific community. Low-fat dairy products such as fat-free or low-fat milk and yogurt are a key component of Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, a science-based set of recommendations for preventing and treating high blood pressure.

Data collection and analysis

So, we had to calculate missing MAP values from reported SBP and DBP values using the formula mentioned in the protocol and we imputed the SE/SD for those. Hence, we conducted additional analyses to see if the very high dose of alcohol (≥ 60 g or ≥ 1 g/kg) had any dose‐related effects compared to lower high doses of alcohol (31 to 59 g of alcohol) (see Table 9). Results suggest that the decrease in BP with very high doses of alcohol is greater compared to lower high doses of alcohol. However, the result was heterogeneous; therefore, we are unable to make any implications from this. Investigators have used a variety of noninvasive tests to evaluate the acute effects of alcohol consumption on myocardial function and hemodynamics in healthy humans.

  • Recent research suggests that automated ambulatory blood pressure monitors are more reliable than manual sphygmomanometers, particularly because automated monitors reduce white coat anxiety (Mirdamadi 2017).
  • Typically, health professionals recommend you try to get three cups of low-fat milk products per day.

Thus, in our review, we used up to 30 g alcohol intake for men and up to 20 g alcohol intake for women as a moderate dose, and above this limit as a high dose. In studies where sex‐specific results were not provided, we categorised dose based on the dominating sex in terms of study participation. Hypertension can be genetic or may be due to environmental factors such as poor diet, obesity, tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, and sedentary lifestyle (Weber 2014; WHO 2013). A population‐based study showed that the incidence of hypertension is higher in African descendants (36%) than in Caucasians (21%) (Willey 2014). Proper management of hypertension can lead to reduction in cardiovascular complications and mortality (Kostis 1997; SHEP 1991; Staessen 1999).

Almost half of all U.S. adults have high blood pressure, and only 1 in 4 of them have it under good control, according to the CDC. Alcohol interferes with the liver’s ability to metabolize hormones renin and angiotensin, which are important for blood pressure control. Additionally, alcohol interferes with steroid production responsible for maintaining blood pressure. In a study from 2021, researchers gave 500 mL of orange https://ecosoberhouse.com/ juice, around 2 cups, daily to people with prehypertension or stage 1 hypertension.

The aim of Bau 2011 was to determine the effects of alcohol on heart rate variability, so SBP was not measured in this study. Dumont 2010 measured blood pressure during the study period, but study authors did not provide the before and after measurement of SBP. The aim of Fazio 2004 was to determine the effects of alcohol on blood flow volume and velocity. Study authors mentioned only that acute ethanol administration caused a transitory increase in BP at 20 minutes.
